A Different Look At...
The House of the Seven Gables
"Growing a Literary Garden"
by Tovah Martin
'Victoria' magazine -- Summertime -- June 1997
"Perhaps it is the contrast between the flowers and the stern facade, but still, who would imagine that the famed House of the Seven Gables would be home to New England's sunniest seaside garden?"
"Yet, just as they were when Nathaniel Hawthorne first set eyes on the house and landscape that inspired his 1851 novel, the grounds are a verdant oasis---schooling visitors in the flowers, trees and vines of a true 19th-century garden."

"In the 1830's, young Hawthorne would often visit the 1668 Salem, Massachusetts, home of his cousin, Susannah Ingersoll, relishing her tales of family history and strolling the garden outdoors--a scene framed by beds of geraniums and ancient lilacs twined with rosebuds."
"Thanks to an extensive restoration, the garden is today filled with many of the old-fashioned flowers that once prevailed--pansies, alyssum, and dusty miller..."

I nearly forgot Midsummer Night's Eve.
Since the 2012 Summer Solstice or Litha, falls on June 20th, tomorrow...
Then Midsummer Night's Eve is tonight!!!
You could hold a Midsummer Night's Fire Ritual...
No big bon-fires here in the city. ,-) But I could find a small, fire-proof pot, and light a tiny fire in it...
And say;
"Today, to celebrate Midsummer, I honor the Earth itself. I am surrounded by tall trees. There is a clear sky above me and cool dirt beneath me, and I am connected to all three. I light this fire as the Ancients did so long ago."

Sounds delightful... I love to pay attention to the changing seasons
and the turning of the Wheel Of The Year.

and foliage, and aristocratic flowers..."

i love the house nestled in the garden, so beautiful and if i had a writing talent it would be inspiring.
I would have loved in that house, providing I had servants to do all the work!!
What a lovely garden. Did you ever read the book? I did once upon a time. I remember very little and should try it again. I'm thinking my old self might get more out of it than my 14-year-old self.
Gorgeous pictures! Tomorrow, summer arrives with a thud around here -- high 90s!
If I get up to New England again, I want to see that house!
Peace,
Muff
I visited his house in the late 1970's. I remember the tour guide was hard to understand because of his pronounced New England speech. And being from Texas - it was hard for him to understand ME!
Love the look of the garden!!!

I have to tell you how I appreciate the comments you have been leaving on my blog. I am writing more content pieces because of your suggestion. Thanks.
Such a beautiful house with all those beautiful flowers.
Thanks for the link. I saw the turtle. My problem is I've seen pictures of both types of turtles and STILL can't tell the difference!!!
I loved her blog and will be reading it from now on.
Hi friend. Just got home from the hospital. Not the best of news. I wrote about it on my blog.
Thanks again for being there for me.

How appropriate that the temps are rising tomorrow then - although you know me and the heat - ugh!
Loved your little look back at the old issue.

What a very beautiful garden that is.
I always thought Midsummer took place at, well, midsummer - somewhere in late July or early August. Go figure. :)
Hey Auntie - You know, I was seriously thinking about the fact that it was about time for the summer solstice. And I immediately thought of YOU. I knew you'd know the date. And here it is already!
I really love to see the inside of that house! And the gardens are so beautiful.
Enjoy your Midsummer Night's Eve!
Midsummer's Eve here is on June 21st. It is the eve of the longest day. As of tomorrow, my thoughts will turn to my favorite seasons of autumn and winter. I do enjoy gardening though but am not a fan of hot weather.
You spoke on my blog about weeds. I have a friend who comes and always wants to pull my weeds. I tell her no. I have brought many of those so called weeds carefully from our cottage to the city garden as I love them! :-)
I remember this article from Victoria even though I no longer have any of the magazines. It is nice to see it again on your blog.
Hugs from Holland ~

I saw your comment on Muff's blog Kalaidacope Muff, so I came over to check you out! I like your idea of having a fire to celebrate the Summer Solstice. I do not practice Wicca, however I like ritual (being the recovering Catholic that I am LOL). Perhaps, since it's supposed to be a nice day tomorrow we can do a little outside fire, just a little late. [though I thought the Solstice was on the 20th, I'll have to check.] BTW, I joined your site!
Oops, I spelled Kaleidoscope wrong. I though it looked funny.
