My old clock, which has been in my family.... For how long? I don't know.
Vee noticed it, when I posted a pic of it before. And asked, what I know of it... Not much.
But this got me wondering.... And looking at it, more closely...
Above, is the outside of the bottom of the door...
And this is the inside of the door... They painted the glass, on the inside, so the painting showed through the glass. You can see some of the brush strokes...
Inside... Lots of deterioration... -sigh- But the key is hanging there, still.
And look what I found, inside the bottom of the clock. How it attaches, we don't know. But when you turn the key, the "works" want to work a bit. :-)
Suppose it's time to take it to a clock shop. "Uncle A." the wood worker knows you don't do too much restoration, of old pieces. No, no. But... He isn't a fancy clock maker.
He has made clocks, like the one which is always in our kitchen. We call it the School House Clock.

He knows someone who does work on clocks. Perhaps we could have the "works," put to working again. And that could be our Christmas present. Something we would both enjoy having done...
"A few days ago I walked along the edge of the lake and was treated to the crunch and rustle of leaves with each step I made. The acoustics of this season are different and all sounds,
no matter how hushed, are as crisp as autumn air."

i used to have a collection of these clocks. they are called ogee clocks because of the trim around the front. and the door is called reverse painting because lots of them have scenes painted on them and they have to paint in reverse on the back of the glass to get the look you want on the front. are there any papers on the inside? a lot of them were made in new england in the 1800's. it looks like the pendulum is attached to a piece that has puled away from the clock. normally the pendulum just hangs to a piece attached to the springs.
its beautiful clock and I think thats a wonderful idea!

a beautiful clock and a great piece of history preserved.
Oh this makes my heart sing... I am certain that a clock maker could put it back to rights without fiddling with any of its beautiful aged qualities. As you may remember, we are is possession of the old Sessions clock, which I would very much like to have working again. Once one becomes used to the clock striking out the hours, it hardly bothers at all. =) Then you can rise in the morning and say things like, "I must have gone to sleep before midnight for I never heard the clock strike twelve." Ha!
What a lovely clock. I have an old cuckoo clock that doesn't work, but I don't have the heart to part with it. Maybe one day I will have it repaired.

It is a beautiful heirloom.
Your clock is a beautiful family piece just as it is. It is wonderful when you can have them repaired and they work as they should. But it can be very expensive. We had a cuckoo clock that my hubby brought back from Germany in the 1960's for his parents. Over the years it stopped doing all of the things that it should so when it became ours we had it repaired and it cost us around $300.00! It was worth it to us to have it work and keep it for our family.
I hope that it all works out for you~~~
It is indeed a beautiful clock! I do hope you can get it restored. We have a Grandfather clock taking up space in our living room. It was my parent's clock that was made by a friend of my dad's. It's not anything fancy, but it's meaningful to me. Trouble is, that my family doesn't like hearing it chime, so I have it sitting quiet! The chimes don't bother me, I rather like them. Oh well, gotta keep the family happy!
It's a beautiful clock! How wonderful that it has been in the family for many years!
It's a beautiful old clock and I think it would be great to get it working again.
I have an old mantle clock from my gramma which doesn't work and every so often I think about trying to get it fixed.
Hi Auntie
Yep I love to Fall back - it seems better for me and my inner clock:)
Speaking of clocks - Love that one! Great idea to have it fixed as a Christmas gift. We have mantel clock that needs fixing too.
Enjoy your week!

beautiful clock...I love when the time goes back...wish it would stay that way...
I love your heirloom clock. Do you think someone in your family may have painted that lovely reverse glass bouquet? Funny you and I seem to be thinking about the same things on the same day quite often, not just the Daylight savings time thing. I just finished posting about my dad's clock collection before I came over to your blog.
I wish we could just stay with the same time all year. I don't like resetting the clocks and electronic stuff, and the time change messes with my sleep. Boo-hoo. Too bad I am such a creature of habit.
A beautiful treasure to have....
I was watching a show the other day about repairing older items - and how expensive it is. Each peace a special piece I guess you'd say - they don't make things like they used too! sandie
