Happy Birthday, Gladys T. 4/12/'13

Happy Birthday, Dear Gladys Taber...

April 12th...

She who wrote such lovely books, concerning life in the country....

{And it is also Susan Branch's Birthday.  :-)}

Gladys,  who lived at a restored farm, called "Stillmeadow."   Which those of us, who loved her books, came to know almost as our own.  :-)  From the reading, and reading, and reading about it, in her books.

Years ago, on a Sunday in summer, my husband, daughter and I flew over to the airport, nearest "Stillmeadow".  (We owned a little Cessna Skyhawk at that time.)  We rented a car and following the *map* I had gleaned, from her books, found our way to Stillmeadow.  It was like a dream come true!  To pull up, in front of that picket fence, and to see that Dear House, which I'd read of, for years.

I must have had that "this-is-too-wonderful-to-be-true" look on my face....  Because her daughter Connie, came out and invited us in.  Gladys wasn't in residence at the time, but Connie and her daughters had come up, to pick blackberries.

I SAW that  FIREPLACE, pictured above!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :-)

And I remember the kindness of her daughter Connie!  To bring us in, and let us have this "we-were-in-Stillmeadow-memory".  :-)

"HIKE the meadows and fields of Stillmeadow Farm. Dedication of Nelson & Polly Camp bench and refreshments follow. Meet at Phillips Farm parking lot on Sanford Road at 1:30. No charge."

I hope the above, means that the project to save land, near Stillmeadow, was successful.

I had a hard time getting here to comment today. For some reason, this comment box wouldn't open. What a lovely place. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Two in one day, look at you go. And must have been grand to get inside as you went to visit her show.

It was fun to see the pic of her at the stove cooking. She was such a great writer. I could always just visualize her home, and all of her sweet dogs and kitties. It was so sweet of her daughter to invite you in.

Oh I do love this essay. I remember your telling me once that this had happened. Just the sweetest memory and now I really do have to find these books. Wonder if my library would possibly-ossibly have them.

I'm up too late again reading. I just had to pop in and say that I love her books about Stillmeadow and the changing seasons there. It must have been so wonderful to get to see her house and actually go inside!! I'm left with wanting more info about the house! Do tell us more. Please and thank you!

What a wonderful memory that must be. How amazing that you were able to visit a house that you had read of so many times. Not many people can say something like that. And how wonderful of Connie to invite you in!

How perfectly AWESOME!!!! What a privilege to have been able to see that! I have read every word Gladys Tabor wrote - and only wish she had written MORE! I read Still Meadow Sampler again each and every year - according to the months.
