"Natural Markers:
+ Plant potatoes as the first dandelions bloom
+ Plant peas when the daffodils flower.
+ Transplant eggplant, melons and peppers when the irises bloom
+ Start looking for squash vine borers when chicory flowers open.
+ Start planting tomatoes when lily-of-the-valley is in full bloom
+ Seed morning glories as soon as the maple trees leaf out.
+ Grasshopper eggs hatch roughly at the same time that lilacs bloom
+ Prune roses when crocuses begin to flower.
+ Put seed corn in the ground when oak leaves are about the size of a squirrel's ear."

Another fun book finished... "Austenland: A Novel" by Shannon Hale.
This makes 2 "Austen-Linked" books I've read, of late. Didn't get *into* them before. Guess now is just more *right,* for me to do so. :-)
Actually, I have never read through any full book by Jane Austen. -looking ashamed- ,-) But this is the third "take-off" on all-things-Austen, which I've read now.
Are you Dear Reader, addicted to Jane Austin, in any form????
Oh, oh... Found more books! I now have 9 books on my Library System Reserve List, and one ready to be picked up today. Oh my!!! That's my reading... A feast or a famine...
Eeeeeek! Found another to add to my list. Now I have 10 books on my Library System Reserve List! NOT all Austen-esque... See above... :-)

I love to read too Auntie, I have the complete works of Jane Austen on my Nook which I purchased for the sum of 99cents from B and N. I have to admit though that I am addicted to the John Sandford and Phillip Margolin books.
I hope you are feeling better today after your outdoor workout. xx
First of all....that header on your blog today....it's breathtaking!!!
As for books, I have topped you by a mile...I bet I have at least 40 books on the library [computer room] that are on my 'to read' list. And I keep going to the half price book store and find more. No, I've not read any Austen books. The one I'm reading now is "The Help". fun, fun, book to read. I'm zippin' right through that one.
As for the planting guide...that's nearly comical. I know of no one who went by any of those. And I'm from a farming group of ancestors. Hmmmm.
OSPREY's 'catch of the day'...come on over to view a couple of magnificent images of the regal bird if you have some time!!!
Good Morning Auntie, stopped by to say Hello and to ask how you are fairing after working in your garden...Hope you are better! Your book list is growing. I like reading too, but have been in my gardens lately. This time of the year I spend quite a bit of time getting thing caught up. Wishing you a beautiful weekend! Hugs
Such interesting gardening facts! May I ask where you found those? Are there more where those came from?
Austen? Movies only. Can not stand to read the books.
Thank you for all those tips. Very cool and I believe every one of them.
Your comment about the reading list makes me laugh. I used to have a huge list but have so many in the house and other things to do that I've let the library slide a little.
i see you climbing the oak tree to measure the leaf and then the ear. LOL. i love reading to. and i love that i can reserve books on line and then go pick them up. i wonder if there i a list of planting times for the south, about half this list would ot fit down here.
This is all well and good but can't really go by a lot of those rules anymore - I mean, here in Illinois, dandelions were blooming in the middle of winter and definitely couldn't be planting then, though the ground never fully freezes anymore. Another reason, why bulbs here grow year round now.
As for me, my Mom has always said that I can grow anything and I tend to agree with her. I don't follow ANY gardening rules. I've always planted by mid to late April ignoring the "plant only after Mother's Day rule here in the north" and have always had great success. I'm not a big rule follower in any sense. ;)
