Kitchen Lights...
We went out for an early dinner on Sun. We were finished and came out of The Old Bryan Inne about 5pm, and it was perfect timing! Waves and waves of Geese were flying over head... Honking away. It was magical... They were flying in the *wrong* direction, so they were probably in a landing pattern, for the lake. :-) They certainly had to be putting down somewhere, since it was nearly dark.
I was soooooooooooooooo thrilled to have seen/heard them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A photo of "one-of-those-things-I-noticed"... And luckily, no one was behind our car, so he could pull over, till I took a pic.
Way up at the top of the red brick building... See those 2 little openings of some sort? Narrow and with rounded tops? What Are They??? ~~~~~~~~ Also note, there used to be a 3rd little opening, between the 2 which show. It was bricked in...
"Uncle A." thought they were a way of letting excess water flow off the roof. But I don't think so. Perhaps they were once used as real windows... Though very, very small. Think servants lived at the top of old houses. In not very nice accomodations. So tiny windows might have been considered enough, for them. -sigh-
Do you Dear Reader, have any ideas, what they were for, when the building was built....?

Look at that barometer! Nearly to 'Very Dry.' Wow, I hate to think of how it will feel, when it starts to drop. Changes in Barometric Pressure cause aches/and/pains in my ("olden") joints.
Frost, on a roof...
Thank you for your suggestions, on freezing/baking a pie. I had thought of doing this, well before Thanksgiving. I have to make an Apple Pie and a Pumpkin Pie and thought it would be good to get most of the work done, before. ~~~~~~~~~~~ But now, I think I'll simply make them both on Wed. In the daytime. Because early evening is devoted to "Pop" and next door Son and "Grands" making the Stuffing for the Thanksgiving dinner turkey. He/"Pop"/"Uncle A." has always fully cooked the Stuffing, and then refrigerated over night, and stuffed the bird, Thanksgiving morning.
Btw, I could not, not, not use store bought crust, or buy my pies... There would be Family Mutiny! -grin-

windows are for decorations, or for the folks who live up there to look out? love the moon shot. great view. have a great week. ( :
great photos, and I understand the pie thing, must keep peace in the family!
i keep forgetting to say how much I love your apples on dishes header. it is beautiful as is the photo of that wonderful old building. maybe the windows were for Rapunzel to let down her hair to the prince? can you tell i have NO clue? hope someone knows. maybe to just let air through the attic?
Morning Auntie
Love your new header! Not sure what those windows would have been for - but I vote for servants quarters too.
Your pies sound wonderful. I'll bake pumpkin rolls tonight who know they may show up on my blog tomorrow:)
Enjoy your week!

those building are italianate. the design was used extensively in the early 1800's. the tiny arched windows were very common and partly for looks but also to vent heat from the attics. interestingly, as soon as you get to the area just before amsterdam, the area where baby food is made, conojohardy?, you see italianate architecture everywhere for some reason, it was very popular in your whole little pocket of upstate new york. it is one of my favorite styles.
Love that photo of the moon. I don't do pies and stuff anymore. This year I will get fruit and usually my sons bring some cakes and stuff. Working the week of Thanksgiving makes it hard to accomplish all I would like to do.

Oh that's a wonderful answer from one of your commenters. John thinks the bricked in window was not as craftily done as it might have been. I see that one of the windows is open and the other is closed with a little wooden door or inner shutter. Very interesting what you eye spied.
No, no, there's no sense in causing a mutiny for want of a pie. ☺ Though it may be time to call in the lovely granddaughters and teach them your skills.
Well spotted!I'm more impressed by you making your own pie crusts.
For all the cooking I (usually) successfully do I cannot make a pie crust which meets my expectations. The horror! The shame!
Looks like you got your answer about the windows from a commenter - interesting!!
I'll be baking a pumpkin pie on Wednesday too. I like making pie crust and wouldn't buy a ready made one.
The little doors or windows are very interesting. I'm curious, too, what they were there for.
I just never can get the pie crust to suit me when I try to do them myself. It's a good thing we like the Pillsbury crusts. :)
I wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving!!
I love your apples...I bet your pies will be wonderful...I'm not a baker...not really much of a cook...I like to make soups and stews....things in the crock pots...hubby loves cooking...
I bet those pies are going to be amazing! And I have no idea about the holes....maybe windows like you said?
Happy Thanksgiving!

I feel they are for ventilation in the attic. You have a trained eye...it is a gift. :) I bet your family's mouth is watering already...mine is :)
Gosh I read all the comments and it is amazing to me - well really not amazing - but it is so impressive to see all the smart answers. Blogs are great. sandie
Love each photo...I feel so welcome and at home here at your blog.
Thank you for sharing it with me.
I'm guessing at the photo with the bricked in window-looking-shape...but they certainly look as though they used to be windows. I hope someone that is familiar with the history of the building will respond. I look forward to knowing myself! :))
Hugs and wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving to you and your...
Love,
Jackie
